Short Text:  A high percentage of students at this school are marked with an 'Insufficient' attempt status in their course enrollments.

Long Text:  More than 50% of student course enrollments (studentSectionAssociations) at this school are marked with an 'Insufficient' attempt status. This pattern may indicate issues with data accuracy. Please review the attempt status and ensure the 'attempt status descriptor' is accurately reported.

How to Fix: This warning displays when WISEdata detects that 50% or more student section associations are marked with an 'Insufficient' attempt status within a school.

  • NOTE: An “Insufficient” attempt status does not refer to a student’s passing or failing grade. It refers to whether a student has been enrolled in a section for the minimum amount of time to receive an outcome.
  • Review the attempt status in your student information system (SIS).
  • If the attempt status descriptor is correct, acknowledge the warning for the student.
  • If the attempt status descriptor is incorrect, change the value in your student information system, then push the data to WISEdata Portal.
  • If a student dropped a course early enough that they would not expect a pass/fail or grade, this would be an appropriate time to see the course marked “insufficient” and acknowledge the warning.

Example: District Deb notices that 63 students for the “Earth and Space” science class at Smallville High School have an attempt status descriptor of ‘Insufficient’. That’s more than half of the students with a student section association for this course.

Deb knows that the attempt status descriptor refers to the length of time a student was enrolled in a class, and it seems unusual for such a popular science course to have this large number of students have this attempt status descriptor type. Deb refers to the Attempt Status Descriptor data element page, and reads in FAQ #1, that:

  • For most student information system (SIS) options, attempt status is scripted and does not need to be submitted manually. If you're unsure whether you need to enter and submit this value yourself, contact your SIS vendor.

Deb reaches out to Power OaSIS, her student information system vendor, and chats with the vendor rep about this warning. The vendor rep sees the incorrect value and is able to help Deb make the corrections easily. Deb queues a manual validation in WISEdata Portal and checks her data a few hours later. She sees the Warning has cleared for the students who actually earned a ‘Sufficient’ attempt status descriptor.

Technical Details:
Business Rule Logic: Throw rule on school when:

  • studentSectionAssociation is submitted, and

The Insufficient Percentage (the number of studentSectionAssociation records where attemptStatusDescriptor = 'Insufficient' compared to the total number of studentSectionAssociation records at a school) is >50%.
